Salt Bank, a Romanian fintech firm, has introduced an unconventional employee benefit program that reimagines the concept of a “13th salary”—a traditional bonus payment common across Central and Eastern Europe.
The campaign, branded “Al 13-lea salariu” (The 13th Salary), invites customers to receive their regular salary deposits into a Salt account during the promotional period running through October 31, 2026. Rather than relying on employers to provide supplementary payments, the bank itself will distribute bonuses to five randomly selected winners in early November.
How the Draw Works
Each eligible customer who receives salary deposits during the campaign period automatically enters the draw. Winners will receive an additional payment equal to the salary they received in October 2026, with a maximum cap of 25,000 lei per winner. This structure ensures that five individuals across the bank’s customer base will receive meaningful financial boosts tied to their actual earning patterns.
The mechanics of the promotion reflect a deliberate repositioning of the salary bonus from being an employer obligation to becoming a banking benefit. By tying the draw to actual salary deposits, Salt Bank creates a direct incentive for wage earners to consolidate their financial activity on its platform.
Strategic Positioning
The initiative appears designed to attract salary account holders during a competitive period in Romania’s fintech landscape. By framing the promotion as an alternative source of salary supplements, Salt Bank positions itself as a financial partner invested in customer prosperity alongside traditional employers.
Robert Anghel, a representative from the company, explained the conceptual shift behind the campaign: “Al 13-lea salariu vine de la angajator. Cel puțin, așa am fost obișnuiți să ne gândim la el. Noi am păstrat partea care contează: salariul în plus. Și am schimbat partea la care nu se gândea nimeni: cine îl oferă. Acum, salariu tău nu mai vine doar de la angajator, vine și de la banca ta, de la Salt.” The statement underscores how the bank preserves the financial benefit while altering expectations about its source.
Broader European Context
This campaign reflects broader trends within the European fintech sector, where digital banking platforms increasingly compete for customer engagement through creative loyalty programs and benefits. Salary account offerings have become central to fintech strategies across the EU, with companies seeking to establish themselves as primary financial hubs for working-age consumers.
Romania’s fintech ecosystem continues to develop as local players innovate around customer acquisition and retention. Salt Bank’s approach demonstrates how regional fintechs differentiate themselves by introducing culturally resonant benefits—in this case, leveraging the deeply rooted concept of 13th-month bonuses while reimagining its delivery mechanism.
As European fintech platforms mature, initiatives like this exemplify the sector’s evolution beyond basic payment processing toward comprehensive financial relationship management that encompasses employee benefits traditionally managed by third parties.
