Romanian Surgical Suture Maker BIOSINTEX Completes Major Automation Overhaul With EU Funding

BIOSINTEX SRL, a Bucharest-based manufacturer of high-performance surgical sutures, has successfully completed an ambitious automation and digitalization project aimed at modernizing its production operations. The initiative, undertaken in partnership with technology firm TRICUBIQ SOLUTIONS SRL, represents a significant investment in advanced manufacturing capabilities for the Romanian medical device sector.

The project, which ran for 16 months, received 9,177,409.68 lei in non-reimbursable funding through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with total project costs reaching 18,071,473.39 lei (approximately $325,000 USD). The PNRR is part of the EU’s broader post-pandemic economic recovery framework, designed to support member states in modernizing key industries.

Production Transformation Through Technology

BIOSINTEX deployed a comprehensive suite of cutting-edge equipment and software solutions to streamline its manufacturing processes. The investments include an advanced robotic suturing machine that automates core production workflows, alongside two robotic packaging systems equipped with artificial intelligence-powered visual inspection capabilities. These systems enable the company to maintain consistent quality standards while increasing throughput.

Beyond hardware, the project incorporated significant digital infrastructure improvements. BIOSINTEX implemented a specialized digitalization software platform that integrates artificial intelligence, business intelligence tools, robotic process automation and Internet of Things connectivity. Additionally, the company installed an enterprise resource planning system featuring advanced warehouse management functionality, alongside cybersecurity solutions incorporating AI-based threat detection and response mechanisms.

The modernization effort also included investment in laboratory equipment designed for qualification testing, ensuring that newly automated processes meet stringent regulatory requirements for medical devices.

Strengthening Market Position

The completion of this automation initiative addresses several strategic objectives for BIOSINTEX. By enhancing production capacity through robotics and AI-driven quality control, the company aims to strengthen its competitive position in international markets. For a specialized manufacturer operating in the medtech sector, such technological investments are increasingly essential for meeting the growing demand for surgical sutures across Europe and beyond.

The integration of digital tools and automation systems also positions BIOSINTEX to better manage supply chain complexities and respond more efficiently to customer requirements, factors that have become increasingly important in healthcare procurement contexts.

Broader European Context

The BIOSINTEX project exemplifies how European Recovery and Resilience Plan funds are being channeled toward industrial modernization in Central and Eastern Europe. Romania’s medical device sector, though smaller than Western European counterparts, is gradually establishing itself through targeted investments in automation and digitalization. Such initiatives support the EU’s broader objectives of fostering innovation, enhancing manufacturing competitiveness and reducing technological gaps between member states.

BIOSINTEX’s successful project completion demonstrates the viability of collaborative approaches between established manufacturers and technology partners, a model increasingly common across the European startup and scale-up ecosystem as companies seek specialized expertise for complex digital transformations.
