Swedish Battery Storage Startup Rebaba Secures $4.6 Million to Expand Second-Life EV Battery Systems Across Europe

Rebaba, a Stockholm-based cleantech company specializing in repurposed electric vehicle battery storage systems, has closed a $4.6 million seed funding round to accelerate its expansion across Europe. The oversubscribed round was led by Sistafund, with participation from EIT Urban Mobility.

The Swedish startup has developed a modular energy storage solution that leverages used EV batteries, addressing both sustainability concerns and the growing demand for stationary battery storage infrastructure. The company’s approach converts second-life batteries into functional grid-scale systems, extending the battery lifecycle while reducing waste in the emerging EV sector.

Scaling Production and Geographic Expansion

Rebaba plans to deploy the fresh capital across several strategic priorities. The company will expand its CircularHub production facility in Stockholm, increasing annual capacity to 40 MWh. Additionally, the startup intends to establish additional CircularHubs in other European markets, beginning its pan-European rollout. The funding round will also support hiring across multiple roles as the company scales operations.

The emphasis on distributed production facilities reflects a deliberate approach to market entry. Rather than concentrating manufacturing in a single location, Rebaba’s strategy involves setting up regional hubs that can serve local markets efficiently.

Technical Innovation and Local Assembly

A key differentiator for Rebaba lies in its technical architecture. By concentrating complexity in its core technology platform, the company designs the remaining system components to be assembled from standard, commercially available parts. This design philosophy has significant implications for deployment flexibility.

“By keeping the complexity within our core technology, we can assemble the rest of the Rebaba system from standard, locally available components. In practice, this means that essentially any technician, anywhere in the world, can build a Rebaba system,” stated Felix Kruse.

This approach addresses a common challenge in scaling hardware startups across multiple geographies: the need for specialized technical expertise and supply chain infrastructure. By enabling local assembly with standard components, Rebaba reduces barriers to expansion and strengthens its operational resilience across different European markets.
