Molten Ventures Secures £175 Million First Close for Growth-Stage Fund

Molten Ventures has announced the £175 million first close of its Ventures Growth Fund, marking a significant milestone for the London-based venture capital firm as it seeks to raise a total of £350 million for the initiative.

The British Business Bank has committed £75 million as a cornerstone investor in the fund, providing substantial institutional backing for Molten Ventures’ strategy to support scaling technology companies across the United Kingdom and Europe. The funding represents a vote of confidence in the firm’s approach to bridging the capital gap for ambitious founders at the Series B stage and beyond.

Targeting Growth-Stage Innovation

The Ventures Growth Fund will focus on Series B and later-round investments in UK and European scale-ups operating across diverse sectors including space technology, artificial intelligence, fintech, quantum computing, deeptech, and hardware. By concentrating on later-stage growth companies, Molten Ventures aims to address a notable gap in the European venture capital landscape, where many promising founders struggle to secure sufficient capital for international expansion.

Ben Wilkinson, CEO of Molten Ventures, highlighted the significance of the British Business Bank’s involvement. “Securing the British Business Bank as a cornerstone investor is a strong endorsement of Molten’s strategy and of the relationship we have built over many years,” Wilkinson stated. “It also underlines the importance of bringing more long-term institutional capital into venture and Growth, so that ambitious UK and European technology companies have the backing they need to scale.”

Building Long-Term Capital Infrastructure

The fund’s structure reflects a broader industry recognition that European technology companies require sustained institutional investment to compete globally. By securing long-term capital commitments, Molten Ventures intends to provide founders with the financial stability needed to expand operations, enter new markets, and accelerate product development without the pressure of immediate exits.

The £75 million commitment from the British Business Bank demonstrates government backing for venture capital initiatives aimed at strengthening the UK’s position as a technology hub. As a public development finance institution, the British Business Bank’s participation signals official support for private venture capital efforts targeting growth-stage companies.

European Ecosystem Context

The first close of this growth-focused fund arrives at a time when the European venture capital market continues to mature following years of record-setting investment activity. While early-stage funding remains competitive, capital for later-stage rounds has proven more challenging to secure, particularly for companies seeking to expand beyond their home markets. Molten Ventures’ initiative reflects efforts by established European venture firms to address this funding gap and retain promising technology companies within the region as they scale internationally.
