Salience Labs, a Cambridge-based developer of photonic chips for artificial intelligence datacenter connectivity, has secured $125 million in a Series B funding round to accelerate the deployment of its optical switching technology and scale manufacturing operations.
The oversubscribed round was led by Bullhound Capital, with participation from a consortium of prominent investors including AMD Ventures, Intel Capital, SBI Group, Hudson River Trading, the British Business Bank, Applied Ventures, Oxford Science Enterprises, Cambridge Innovation Capital, and Silicon Catalyst Ventures. This collection of backers underscores the strategic importance of optical switching technology for the next generation of AI infrastructure.
Scaling Production for AI Infrastructure
Salience Labs specializes in optical circuit switching technology designed to improve datacenter networking efficiency. As artificial intelligence workloads become increasingly demanding, the company’s integrated on-chip optical switching solutions offer a pathway to managing the complex connectivity requirements of large-scale AI systems.
The funding will be deployed across several key initiatives. The company plans to accelerate the rollout of its optical circuit switching technology in AI datacenters, expand its high-volume manufacturing capabilities, develop next-generation optical switching products, and grow its engineering team and geographic footprint.
Speaking about the investment, Vaysh Kewada commented: “OCS will play a critical role in AI datacenter networking. As customers roll out optical links in their datacenters, high‑performance optical switches are needed to deliver the token economics that workloads demand. Salience Labs has demonstrated a market‑leading technology: a fully integrated on‑chip solution that scales well to high‑volume manufacturing.”
Strategic Positioning in Semiconductor Market
The diversity of investors in this round reflects broader trends within the semiconductor and datacenter infrastructure sectors. The participation of both AMD Ventures and Intel Capital—typically seen as competitive entities—alongside international investors like SBI Group demonstrates the perceived strategic value of optical switching technology for addressing AI infrastructure bottlenecks.
The backing of established venture investors alongside corporate venture arms suggests confidence in Salience Labs’ ability to transition from development to production-scale deployment. This is particularly significant for a deeptech company, where manufacturing scale and reliability are critical success factors.
European Deeptech Momentum
Salience Labs’ Series B success reflects a broader trend of European deeptech companies attracting significant international capital. The combination of Cambridge’s strong research heritage, the company’s focus on photonic technology, and investor confidence in addressing real datacenter infrastructure challenges positions the firm within a growing ecosystem of European companies tackling fundamental limitations in computing and connectivity infrastructure.
The substantial commitment from major semiconductor companies and investment firms signals that optical switching is moving from research into commercial deployment phases, with Salience Labs positioned as a key player in this transition.
