Restate, a Berlin-based infrastructure startup, has secured $20 million in Series A funding, bringing its total capital raised to $27 million. The round was led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures.
Founded in 2024 by the team behind Apache Flink, the open-source stream processing framework, Restate is building infrastructure designed to make distributed systems more reliable. The company’s platform addresses a fundamental challenge in modern software development: ensuring durability across interconnected services, agents, and workflows.
Solving Durability at Infrastructure Level
The founding team identified a critical gap in how contemporary applications handle reliability. While traditional approaches focused on making individual processes durable, today’s software increasingly relies on complex interactions between multiple components that must maintain state consistently.
“Durable execution solved an important problem: it made individual processes reliable. But software is increasingly made up of services, agents, workflows, and state that all need to stay reliable as they interact. We believe durability has to become a property of the infrastructure itself,” said Stephan Ewen, CEO and Co-founder of Restate, in a statement reflecting the company’s core philosophy.
The platform aims to simplify development of AI agents and workflows by providing infrastructure-level guarantees that prevent failures from cascading through distributed systems.
Expansion Into North American Market
Restate plans to deploy its fresh capital toward two primary objectives: accelerating product development and establishing a commercial presence in the United States. The company will open a new commercial hub in San Francisco, marking its entry into the North American market and positioning it closer to potential enterprise customers and investors.
The funding validates the founders’ expertise in distributed systems and stream processing. Their previous work on Apache Flink, which processes trillions of events annually across enterprises worldwide, provides strong credentials in tackling infrastructure challenges at scale.
European AI Infrastructure Wave
The funding round reflects broader momentum in European AI infrastructure development. Berlin has emerged as a significant hub for technically sophisticated startups addressing foundational computing challenges, particularly in areas where European teams bring deep expertise in systems engineering and open-source software development.
Restate joins a growing cohort of European companies targeting the infrastructure layer of AI and distributed systems, where technical complexity and specialized knowledge create defensible competitive advantages. The involvement of established venture capital firms like Redpoint Ventures and the strategic participation of Capital One Ventures suggests confidence that the problem space justifies significant investment.
The company’s timing appears strategic, arriving as enterprises increasingly deploy AI agents and automated workflows that require robust handling of state and reliability concerns. By positioning durability as an infrastructure concern rather than an application-level problem, Restate is addressing infrastructure gaps that will likely become more pronounced as AI-driven systems grow more prevalent in production environments.
