Wero, a European payment platform, is expanding its network as payment providers from several Southern and Northern European countries will connect via a new joint venture based in Madrid. The initiative will allow seamless cross‑border payments for consumers, such as sending a Tikkie abroad or paying online without a credit card, and aims to increase Wero’s reach despite challenges in markets like Germany.
Wero has expanded its payment solution to physical cash registers in Belgium, allowing consumers to pay with NFC or QR codes via Payworld. The rollout marks a step toward European payment sovereignty, bypassing US card processors, and follows a rapid adoption across several European countries.

European Payments Initiative (EPI) announced that the new payment scheme Wero will give Dutch e‑commerce merchants an extra 1.5 years to implement the required consumer‑protection measures. The deadline for introducing purchase protection has been moved from October 2026 to the end of 2028, and the transaction pricing will stay at current iDEAL levels until then. Additional Wero products, such as subscriptions, are expected in 2027, with purchase protection becoming available with those new offerings.
