Grampet Group, through its manufacturing division Electroputere VFU Pașcani, has demonstrated the LEON train during a ceremonial journey across Romania, marking a significant milestone for the country’s rail industry. The three-car diesel multiple unit represents the first passenger train manufactured domestically in Romania in approximately 80 years.
The special journey from Bucharest to Brașov carried an international delegation of space explorers, including Romanian cosmonaut Dumitru Prunariu alongside astronauts from Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Turkey. The symbolic voyage underscored Romania’s technological capabilities across multiple sectors, connecting the nation’s aerospace heritage with its emerging rail manufacturing prowess.
Technical specifications and market ambitions
The LEON train incorporates modern engineering standards suitable for regional passenger services. The three-car configuration provides 145 to 155 seats, powered by dual 390 kW MTU engines enabling operational speeds of up to 120 km/h. The unit features contemporary passenger amenities designed for comfort on medium-distance routes.
Grampet Group has outlined expansion plans leveraging the LEON platform. The company intends to increase passenger operations using multiple LEON units while simultaneously integrating an additional 80 ICE4 trains acquired from Denmark into its fleet. This dual approach suggests a strategy to balance domestic manufacturing capacity with proven rolling stock from established suppliers.
Recognition of aerospace achievements
The ceremonial journey extended beyond rail operations, incorporating visits to the Air Force Academy in Brașov. During these visits, an auditorium was formally named after Prunariu, recognizing his contributions to Romania’s space exploration history.
