Romanian Aerospace Startup BraveX Aero Partners with Romaero to Scale UAV Production for European Defense Market

BraveX Aero, a Cluj-based aerospace company specializing in advanced fixed-wing unmanned aerial systems with jet propulsion, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Romaero to establish a strategic partnership focused on developing and manufacturing UAVs for the European defense and security sector.

The collaboration brings together two distinct strengths within Romania’s aerospace ecosystem. BraveX Aero contributes technological expertise and innovation in autonomous systems and composite materials, while Romaero, an established aerospace manufacturer with decades of industrial experience, provides production infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities needed to scale operations.

Combining Innovation with Industrial Scale

The partnership will focus on developing integrated industrial capabilities for producing unmanned aerial systems, with particular emphasis on UAV structures and airframes made from composite materials. The agreement also encompasses technology transfer initiatives and the joint pursuit of aerospace and defense projects targeting both European and international markets.

According to CEO Răzvan Costea-Bărluțiu, the partnership represents a strategic approach to leveraging Romania’s existing resources and capabilities. “Local potential exists and is far too significant to be overlooked. Startups like BraveX Aero must grow intelligently, identifying resources where they exist and capitalizing on them. Such a partnership naturally leads to the growth and maturation of the Romanian industry in a competitive, crowded space, supported by real opportunities such as the SAFE program,” he stated.

Recent Commercial Traction

The partnership announcement comes as BraveX Aero has secured a significant order from a major European defense industry player for Romania’s first jet-powered drone capable of reaching speeds up to 500 km/h. The company is also pursuing a seed funding round expected to close by the end of 2026, indicating continued momentum in its development trajectory.

The venture operates within the deeptech aerospace sector, positioning itself at the growth stage with ambitions to establish scalable production capabilities that can meet growing European demand for advanced unmanned systems.

European Defense Imperatives

The timing of this partnership reflects broader European priorities regarding defense innovation and technological sovereignty. The continent has increasingly emphasized the need to develop indigenous capabilities in advanced defense technologies, including unmanned systems. Romania’s participation in these initiatives positions the country as a potential hub for aerospace innovation within Central and Eastern Europe.

Through initiatives like the SAFE (Support for Advanced Frontier-oriented Experimentation) program referenced by Costea-Bărluțiu, European funding mechanisms are directing resources toward companies capable of translating cutting-edge research into production-ready systems that address genuine security requirements.

The BraveX Aero-Romaero collaboration exemplifies a model gaining traction across the European startup ecosystem: established industrial players partnering with agile technology companies to bridge the gap between innovation and manufacturing scale, ultimately strengthening the continent’s technological independence and competitive positioning in critical sectors.
