Kontext, a German cybersecurity startup focused on runtime security for artificial intelligence agents, has secured $4 million in seed funding to accelerate development of its control platform. The round was led by 42CAP, with participation from a16z CSX and HTGF.
The funding will support the expansion of Kontext’s engineering team, continued development of its runtime enforcement platform, and customer adoption as enterprises increasingly deploy AI agents to execute real-world tasks. The company’s platform provides real-time monitoring and control over AI agent actions, addressing a growing security concern as these systems move beyond text generation to operating software and business processes.
Addressing a Critical Security Gap
As AI agents become more autonomous and integrated into business operations, enterprises face a fundamental security challenge: an AI system can authenticate properly, access approved tools, and still perform actions that were never authorized. Kontext’s approach targets this vulnerability through a verification mechanism that operates at the moment of execution.
“An AI agent can be properly authenticated, use an approved tool, and still take an action no one authorized,” explained Jens Ernstberger, co-founder of Kontext. “As agents move from generating text to operating software, companies need a control point at the moment of action. Kontext connects identity with task context and policy to decide what an agent is allowed to do before it happens.”
This runtime enforcement model contrasts with earlier approaches to AI security that primarily focused on model training or output filtering. By intervening at the execution layer, Kontext aims to provide enterprises with greater visibility and control over agent behavior without requiring modifications to underlying AI models.
Strategic Investor Backing
The participation of multiple investors reflects growing recognition of runtime security as a critical category within the broader AI safety space. a16z CSX, the artificial intelligence safety-focused initiative from Andreessen Horowitz, has been increasingly active in supporting startups developing technical controls for AI systems. HTGF (High-Tech Gründerfonds), a leading early-stage investor in European technology startups, rounds out a backing group that spans both international venture capital and regional German investors.
European AI Security Ecosystem
The funding round underscores Germany’s emerging role as a hub for AI security innovation. Beyond Kontext, the European startup landscape has seen increased activity in AI safety and security tools, driven partly by regulatory pressure from the EU AI Act and heightened enterprise demand for risk management solutions. The combination of technical talent, regulatory scrutiny, and customer demand across continental Europe has created favorable conditions for security-focused AI startups to develop and scale their platforms.
As organizations move toward wider deployment of AI agents in production environments, the need for robust runtime controls will likely intensify, positioning companies like Kontext at the intersection of growing enterprise requirements and investor interest in AI risk mitigation technologies.
