Flip.ro Partners With iSTYLE to Launch Device Buyback Program Across Romania

Flip.ro, a Romanian startup specializing in the refurbishment of smartphones, tablets, laptops and other consumer electronics, has announced a partnership with iSTYLE, an Apple Premium Reseller chain operating across Romania. The collaboration introduces a buyback program designed to streamline the process of trading in used devices while purchasing new technology products.

How the Buyback Program Works

The initiative enables customers to exchange older devices through both physical iSTYLE locations and online channels. When customers decide to upgrade their technology, they can initiate a trade-in at participating iSTYLE stores or through the digital platform. The process involves receiving an instant evaluation of their device’s condition and value, which can then be applied toward a new purchase.

Once a trade-in is completed, Flip.ro handles the backend logistics. The used device is sent to Flip’s facilities for thorough verification and assessment. Customers receive payment for their traded-in items within one to three business days following the completion of this verification process.

The program launched in iSTYLE physical stores during May 2025, with the online component becoming available from May 2026, allowing for a phased rollout across both retail channels.

Sustainability at Scale

For Flip.ro, the partnership represents a significant milestone in bringing circular economy principles into mainstream consumer behavior. Alex Burghelia, cofounder of Flip, emphasized the broader importance of the initiative: “Buyback is one of the most concrete solutions through which we can bring the concept of sustainability and circular economy into the routine of technology consumers. This collaboration marks an important step for Flip: it is the first partnership with an Apple Premium Partner, which allows us to offer a complete experience, both in store and online.”

The partnership underscores a growing recognition that device refurbishment and trade-in programs can meaningfully reduce electronic waste while extending product lifecycles. By creating friction-free mechanisms for customers to participate in circular economy models, both companies aim to normalize device recycling and refurbishment among mainstream technology consumers in Romania.

Broader European Context

The announcement comes as European startups increasingly focus on circular economy solutions within the technology sector. The European Union’s growing emphasis on sustainability regulations, including the Right to Repair directive and extended producer responsibility frameworks, has created favorable conditions for refurbishment and buyback platforms. Flip.ro’s expansion through strategic retail partnerships reflects a broader trend of circular economy startups moving beyond direct-to-consumer models to integrate with established retail networks.

Similar buyback and refurbishment initiatives have gained traction across Europe, with companies recognizing that achieving scale in the circular economy requires embedding trade-in programs into existing consumer purchase journeys. Flip.ro’s partnership with iSTYLE demonstrates how startups can leverage established retail infrastructure to accelerate adoption of sustainable technology consumption practices.
