Estonian Startup Golbriak Space Raises €4 Million to Scale Laser Communications for Satellite Networks

Golbriak Space, an Estonian developer of laser communication systems for satellite and airborne platforms, has secured €4 million in seed-stage financing to accelerate the industrialisation of its technology and expand manufacturing capacity.

The funding round was co-led by Join Capital and PhotonVentures, with participation from Takeoff, the venture capital arm of the Crédit Agricole national accelerator network. The capital injection comes as the startup moves beyond the research and validation phase toward large-scale production to meet growing demand from satellite constellation operators.

Addressing Real-World Deployment Challenges

Golbriak Space has developed optical communications terminals designed to enable high-speed data transmission between satellites and ground stations, as well as between airborne platforms. The company’s focus has been on solving the practical engineering challenges that have historically limited laser communications deployment at scale, including reliability in varied atmospheric conditions and manufacturing complexity.

According to Nicola Garzaniti, a representative of the company, the milestone represents validation of the startup’s approach. “Closing this round marks a turning point for Golbriak. Years of research, specialised engineering and customer validation have gone into solving the practical challenges that determine whether laser communications can operate reliably at scale. We have addressed the key challenges required for large‑scale deployment of optical communications. We have functioning products, paying customers and demand that is now expanding towards programmes involving thousands of terminals,” Garzaniti said.

From Validation to Production Scale

The €4 million will be deployed across several operational priorities. Golbriak Space plans to accelerate development of its Estonian operating subsidiary, scale production of its optical terminal offerings, and expand manufacturing capacity to accommodate demand for thousands of communication terminals across multiple satellite and airborne programmes.

The company’s product family includes the ERMESAI+ and ARES terminal systems, which are positioned for integration into both commercial and government satellite networks. As global satellite operators pursue increasingly ambitious constellation deployments—from broadband internet services to Earth observation and government communications—optical communications have emerged as a critical technology for managing the exponential growth in data throughput requirements.

Context Within European Space Innovation

The investment reflects the broader European effort to build competitive advantages in space technology and communications infrastructure. Optical communications represent a strategic capability gap that European companies have begun addressing through startups and established players alike. Unlike radio-frequency systems, laser-based communications offer significantly higher bandwidth and lower power consumption, advantages that become increasingly important as satellite constellations scale to thousands of operational units.

Golbriak Space’s development aligns with the European Union’s growing focus on technological sovereignty in space systems, particularly as demand for satellite-based services continues to expand across telecommunications, Earth observation, and government applications. The startup’s path from research to production scaling demonstrates the maturation of the European space technology ecosystem, where venture capital support is increasingly available for deep-tech companies addressing real infrastructure challenges.
