Golbriak Space, an Estonian space technology company, has secured €4 million ($4.3 million) in seed funding to accelerate the production of laser communication terminals designed for satellite constellations. The round was co-led by Join Capital and PhotonVentures, with additional backing from Takeoff Accelerator, CDP Venture Capital, and Plug and Play.
The Tallinn-based company specializes in laser communications technology for satellites, a field that has attracted growing commercial interest as operators seek higher data transmission rates and more efficient communication solutions compared to traditional radio-frequency systems. Golbriak Space’s funding will enable the transition from the development phase into serial production, allowing the company to meet increasing market demand while maintaining the stringent quality standards required for space hardware.
From Research to Manufacturing
According to Nicola Garzaniti, Founder & CEO of Golbriak Space, the investment represents a critical milestone in the company’s trajectory. “Closing this round marks a turning point for Golbriak. Years of research, specialised engineering and customer validation have gone into solving the practical challenges that determine whether laser communications can operate reliably at scale. Our priority now is to serve that demand reliably and at volume,” Garzaniti stated.
The capital injection will be directed toward establishing serial production capabilities, expanding manufacturing capacity, and fulfilling larger commercial orders. This expansion requires careful balance between scaling operations and preserving the engineering excellence and quality assurance protocols essential to space-grade hardware production.
Growing European Space Tech Ecosystem
The funding announcement reflects broader momentum within Europe’s space technology sector, where companies are increasingly focusing on enabling infrastructure for the expanding commercial satellite industry. Laser communications technology represents a key area of development, as mega-constellations from providers like SpaceX’s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper create demand for more sophisticated inter-satellite and ground-to-space communication systems.
The diversified investor syndicate backing Golbriak Space demonstrates confidence from both venture capital and specialized space-focused funds in the viability of the technology. The involvement of Takeoff Accelerator and Plug and Play, both of which maintain active engagement with European startup ecosystems, suggests strategic interest in supporting deep-tech companies through the challenging transition from prototype to production.
For Estonia, the funding underscores the Nordic nation’s emergence as a hub for advanced space technology development, building on its existing strengths in telecommunications infrastructure and software engineering. As European space companies compete globally to capture opportunities in satellite communications and Earth observation markets, firms like Golbriak Space are positioning themselves to supply critical components for next-generation orbital infrastructure.
