D-Orbit Sends Mandalorian Helmet to Orbit in Disney Partnership

D-Orbit, an Italian spacetech company, has partnered with The Walt Disney Company Italia to send a specially prepared replica of the Mandalorian helmet into orbit as part of a promotional campaign for the Star Wars series The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The helmet launched on March 30, 2026, aboard the Wayfinder mission, which represented the 22nd commercial mission of D-Orbit’s ION Satellite Carrier. The payload lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Transporter-16 mission. Once in orbit, the helmet was positioned at approximately 510 kilometers altitude in a sun-synchronous orbit configuration.

Capturing Earth from Space

The replica was a 3D-scanned version of the iconic helmet, and D-Orbit equipped it with cameras developed internally by the company to capture images against the backdrop of Earth. These photographs represent a unique fusion of entertainment and space technology, documenting the moment that a beloved Star Wars artifact traveled beyond the atmosphere.

The mission showcased the practical applications of commercial space infrastructure beyond traditional satellite deployment and technology testing. By integrating promotional materials into operational space missions, D-Orbit and Disney Italia demonstrated an emerging approach to branded content in the space industry.

Renato Panesi, co-founder of D-Orbit, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. “Questa collaborazione è un esempio di come tecnologia e fantascienza si possano completare per dare vita a qualcosa di emozionante. Sono molto orgoglioso del lavoro svolto dalla squadra, soprattutto da coloro che hanno sviluppato e operato la telecamera che ha effettuato le riprese in orbita. Il loro ingegno ha consentito la realizzazione di un sogno,” he stated, highlighting the technical achievement of the internal camera systems and the emotional significance of executing this unique project.

Growing Commercial Space Opportunities

The partnership underscores the diversifying commercial opportunities within the space sector, particularly for companies offering payload deployment services. D-Orbit’s ION Satellite Carrier platform has established itself as a flexible solution for various mission requirements, from Earth observation to technology demonstrations and now entertainment-focused initiatives.

This mission reflects broader trends in the European space industry, where Italian companies continue to establish themselves as significant contributors to the commercial space economy. D-Orbit’s work demonstrates how European spacetech firms can compete in specialized niches while maintaining operational excellence and innovation in orbital services.

The success of such partnerships may encourage additional collaborations between entertainment companies and space service providers, potentially opening new revenue streams for the commercial space sector while creating distinctive promotional opportunities for content creators seeking novel ways to engage audiences globally.
