Cubbit, an Italian cloud storage company, has entered into a business-alliance partnership with Ukrainian cloud provider GigaCloud to establish a geo-distributed, sovereign cloud infrastructure serving organisations across Ukraine and Poland.
Under the agreement, Cubbit’s DS3 Composer technology will be integrated into GigaCloud’s data centres located in Kyiv and Lviv in Ukraine, as well as Warsaw in Poland. The solution fragments, encrypts, and distributes data across multiple trusted sites, enabling organisations to maintain continuous access to their information even if a single data centre becomes compromised or unavailable.
The partnership directly addresses the need for cloud services designed specifically for the Eastern European context. Rather than applying cloud infrastructure models developed for more stable markets, the solution reflects the operational realities and requirements of Ukrainian and Polish organisations, particularly those in critical sectors.
Meeting regional data-sovereignty requirements
Both Ukraine and Poland operate under strict data-protection regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The new infrastructure ensures that sensitive information belonging to government, defence, and other critical organisations remains within the region while maintaining the resilience necessary for operations in uncertain environments.
Nazariy Kurochko, CEO of GigaCloud, explained the strategic importance of this approach: “Cloud infrastructures in our region cannot be designed according to logic developed in more stable markets. Our organisations have learned to think differently: to plan accounting for uncertainty, to prioritise control, and to choose architectures that remain reliable even when scenarios change. This partnership with Cubbit allows us to transform such experience into a concrete storage model, designed for organisations that seek not only capacity, but also reliability.”
The distributed architecture underlying the solution offers several technical advantages. By fragmenting and encrypting data before distribution, organisations gain protection against both external threats and potential insider risks. The multi-site approach also reduces dependency on any single infrastructure point, a critical consideration for organisations operating in regions where infrastructure resilience cannot be assumed.
European cloud sovereignty in focus
The partnership reflects broader European efforts to develop cloud infrastructure alternatives to dominant non-European providers. The European Union has emphasised the importance of digital sovereignty and data protection, particularly for critical sectors including defence and government operations.
This initiative positions both Cubbit and GigaCloud within the growing ecosystem of European companies building alternatives to concentrated cloud markets. The partnership demonstrates how technologies developed for specific regional challenges can create competitive advantages while addressing genuine security and operational requirements.
The integration of Cubbit’s technology into GigaCloud’s existing infrastructure in two countries signals confidence in the commercial viability of sovereign cloud solutions for Eastern European organisations. As European policymakers continue prioritising data sovereignty and regional infrastructure resilience, such partnerships may become increasingly important for organisations seeking alternatives that balance capability with control.
