AI Agents Now Account for Over 5% of B2B Website Traffic, New Research Shows

Leadinfo, a Netherlands-based B2B intelligence platform, has released research indicating that artificial intelligence agents are responsible for a rapidly growing share of traffic to business-to-business websites. The study, which analyzed nearly 9 billion traffic events, found that AI agents accounted for 5.3% of all visits in the third quarter of 2026—a dramatic increase from just 0.1% in the first quarter of the same year.

The findings underscore the accelerating presence of AI technologies in digital ecosystems, even as many marketers remain focused on traditional metrics for measuring website performance. While bot traffic in general has also grown during this period, the report highlights that AI-agent traffic is expanding at a particularly steep rate, closing the gap between automated and traditional bot activity.

The Challenge for Marketing Teams

The implications of these findings extend beyond simple traffic statistics. As AI agents become increasingly prevalent, they generate website visits that may distort conventional understanding of customer interest and engagement. This phenomenon poses a significant challenge to marketers who rely on traffic volume as a primary indicator of potential business opportunities.

Twan Stoppelenburg, addressing this concern, noted: “Marketers are used to reading growth in website traffic as growth in interest of potential customers. That assumption is becoming less valid. If more than 5% of your traffic now comes from AI agents, you need to know where to direct your campaigns. Measure that traffic separately and link your marketing data to real leads and revenue.”

The warning reflects a broader need for companies to refine their analytical approaches. Distinguishing between visits generated by artificial intelligence systems and those from genuine human prospects has become essential for accurate performance assessment and effective campaign allocation.

Separating Signal from Noise

Leadinfo’s research emphasizes the importance of implementing more sophisticated traffic analysis methodologies. Rather than treating all website visits as equivalent indicators of market interest, B2B companies must develop systems that isolate AI-generated activity and connect traffic data to tangible business outcomes.

This approach requires marketers to move beyond surface-level metrics and establish direct correlations between website activity and actual leads or revenue generated. Such integration ensures that business decisions and marketing investments are grounded in authentic customer engagement rather than inflated traffic numbers driven by automated systems.

The Dutch firm’s analysis reflects growing attention within the European startup ecosystem to the practical challenges posed by AI proliferation. As artificial intelligence technologies become more sophisticated and prevalent, companies across the continent are grappling with how to extract meaningful insights from increasingly complex digital environments. The findings suggest that maintaining data integrity and analytical accuracy will be critical competitive advantages for organizations navigating this evolving landscape.
