Verda Secures €22 Million InvestEU-Backed Loan to Expand AI Cloud Infrastructure

Verda, a Helsinki-based artificial intelligence infrastructure provider, has obtained a €22 million loan from the Nordic Investment Bank to finance the expansion of its cloud computing capabilities. The financing, supported by the European Commission’s InvestEU programme, will fund the acquisition of graphics processing units and related equipment to strengthen Verda’s data centre operations across Finland.

The company plans to deploy the capital towards purchasing GPUs, networking and storage equipment, and constructing new high-performance servers within its Finnish facilities. This investment comes as Verda continues to scale its services in response to growing demand for accessible artificial intelligence computing resources across Europe.

Scaling Infrastructure for AI Teams

Founded in 2020, Verda has established itself as a provider of cloud-based artificial intelligence infrastructure designed to give development teams rapid access to computing power. The startup has already raised €102.5 million in total funding earlier this year, positioning it among the more substantially capitalised infrastructure companies in the Nordic region.

Ruben Bryon, representing the company, underscored the strategic importance of the investment: “AI is becoming critical infrastructure. With the support of NIB and our other financing partners, we can expand our capacity and keep serving AI teams with instant access to high-performance computing at scale,” he stated.

The Nordic Investment Bank’s involvement signals institutional confidence in Verda’s business model and operational trajectory. As a multilateral development bank serving Nordic and Baltic countries, NIB’s participation reflects the growing recognition that artificial intelligence infrastructure represents a foundational layer for European technological development.

European Infrastructure Priorities

This financing announcement arrives during a period of heightened European focus on artificial intelligence infrastructure independence. The continent has identified computational capacity as a strategic priority, particularly as demand for training and deploying large language models and other AI systems accelerates globally.

Verda’s emphasis on renewable-powered data centres aligns with European sustainability standards and reduces the environmental footprint associated with energy-intensive AI workloads. The company’s operations in Finland benefit from the region’s abundant hydroelectric and wind power resources, positioning it competitively within environmental and regulatory frameworks increasingly adopted across the European Union.

The InvestEU backing further underscores the European Commission’s commitment to channelling capital towards infrastructure that strengthens the continent’s technological sovereignty. By supporting companies like Verda, EU financing mechanisms aim to reduce dependence on non-European providers and ensure European artificial intelligence developers maintain viable alternatives for accessing high-performance computing resources.

As artificial intelligence adoption accelerates across sectors ranging from scientific research to enterprise applications, the availability of local, reliable infrastructure providers becomes increasingly consequential. Verda’s expansion adds to the growing ecosystem of European companies working to build computational capacity that meets continental demand while adhering to regulatory and sustainability standards.
