UK Biotech iFAST Diagnostics Secures £5M Series B to Accelerate Infection Testing Innovation

iFAST Diagnostics, a United Kingdom-based biotech company specialising in rapid infection diagnostics, has closed a £5 million Series B funding round to advance its antimicrobial susceptibility testing technology across multiple markets.

The round was led by Meridian Health Ventures, with participation from QantX, RAW Ventures, OKG Capital, and Cambridge Capital Group. This brings the company’s total funding to £12 million since its founding in 2019.

iFAST Diagnostics has developed a diagnostic platform designed to rapidly identify infections and test bacterial resistance to antibiotics. The technology addresses a critical healthcare challenge: antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which the World Health Organisation has identified as one of the top ten global public health threats.

Accelerating Market Access

The fresh capital will support three key strategic priorities. First, the company plans to expand its rollout across the United Kingdom, strengthening its presence in the domestic market. Second, iFAST Diagnostics will pursue regulatory approval in the European Union, positioning the platform for broader adoption across EU member states. Third, the funding will accelerate the company’s clinical and regulatory programme targeting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration, opening the lucrative American market.

Tim Irish, representing the lead investor, expressed confidence in the company’s trajectory: “We are exceptionally proud to be partnered with iFAST Diagnostics. Their breakthrough technology has the potential to transform clinical practice, improve patient outcomes, and significantly slow the spread of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).”

Addressing a Growing Healthcare Crisis

Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites develop the ability to survive drugs designed to eliminate them. This phenomenon complicates treatment of infections and increases the risk of severe disease, prolonged hospitalisation, and mortality. Rapid diagnostic testing is considered essential for combating AMR, as it enables healthcare professionals to identify the specific pathogen and its resistance profile quickly, facilitating targeted rather than broad-spectrum antibiotic use.

iFAST Diagnostics’ technology positions itself within this critical ecosystem by providing faster results than traditional culture-based methods, potentially reducing unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions and improving clinical decision-making in acute care settings.

European Ecosystem Context

The investment reflects growing momentum in the European healthtech sector, particularly around diagnostics and antimicrobial resistance solutions. The UK remains a significant hub for biotech innovation outside the traditional European clusters, with strong support from venture capital firms increasingly focused on healthcare infrastructure challenges. iFAST Diagnostics joins a cohort of diagnostic companies securing substantial funding to address unmet clinical needs, demonstrating investor appetite for technologies that tackle both immediate patient care requirements and broader public health priorities like AMR.
