Sport e Salute has completed installation of a pressurised roof structure over the swimming stadium at Rome’s Foro Italico, a significant upgrade to one of Italy’s most prominent sports facilities. The new covering measures 37 metres by 66 metres by 7 metres and transforms the Stadio del Nuoto into a year-round venue for competitive and recreational aquatic activities.
The infrastructure improvement addresses a longstanding limitation of the historic pool complex, which previously operated primarily during warmer months. With the new pressurised roof system in place, swimmers, water polo teams, and other aquatic athletes can now access the facility consistently throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions.
Supporting Athletes and Citizens
Diego Nepi Molineris, CEO of Sport e Salute, characterised the project as more than a straightforward construction endeavour. “We strongly wanted this intervention because we believe the Foro Italico must continue to evolve, anticipating the needs of tomorrow’s sport,” Nepi Molineris stated. “This new covering is much more than an infrastructure work: it is an investment in people, allowing an ever‑growing number of athletes and citizens to train and experience sport in every season, with more functional and versatile spaces.”
The upgrade enables enhanced functionality for multiple user categories. Training programmes for competitive athletes will benefit from consistent availability, while recreational swimmers and water polo players gain expanded access to the facility. The pressurised design also improves climate control and operational efficiency within the stadium environment.
Strategic Importance for Rome’s Sporting Future
The Foro Italico has long served as a central hub for Italian sport and remains positioned to host international aquatic competitions. The roof installation supports the venue’s capacity to accommodate major events while maintaining daily training schedules for local athletes and citizens. The weather-independent operation represents a practical advancement for sports infrastructure in the Mediterranean climate, where seasonal variations previously constrained facility usage.
Sport e Salute, the Italian public entity responsible for the development and management of sports infrastructure, prioritised this modernisation as part of its broader mandate to enhance sporting opportunities across the country. The project reflects strategic investment in facilities that serve both elite training requirements and community recreational needs.
European Infrastructure Evolution
The upgrade to Rome’s Foro Italico represents a broader trend across European sports facilities, where operators increasingly invest in climate-control solutions to maximise facility usage and extend competitive seasons. Similar pressurised and covered structures have been adopted at other major European swimming complexes to address seasonal accessibility challenges. Such infrastructure improvements align with European sporting bodies’ emphasis on year-round training environments and climate-resilient facilities designed to accommodate expanding schedules of international competitions and domestic programming.
