Infraestruturas de Portugal has received authorization to implement a phased payment schedule for the complete modernization of the Alentejo Railway Line, marking a significant commitment to upgrading the nation’s rail network.
The project encompasses a €410.68 million investment directed toward transforming the 63-kilometer stretch connecting Casa Branca to Beja. The scope of work includes complete replacement of existing track infrastructure, full electrification of the line, and installation of modern signaling and telecommunications systems. Upon completion, the modernized corridor will accommodate passenger trains traveling at speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour, while freight services will operate at maximum speeds of 120 kilometers per hour.
Phased Implementation Timeline
The financial disbursements for this ambitious undertaking will extend across seven years, running from 2027 through 2033. This structured approach allows for staged investment while minimizing disruption to existing services during the construction and modernization phases.
Government officials have signaled their intention to secure additional financial support through Portugal 2030, the country’s recovery and resilience framework, alongside other available European Union financing mechanisms.
