Lithuanian fintech Axiology joins ECB’s Pontes service for digital securities settlement

Axiology, a Lithuanian fintech company based in Vilnius, has been selected as part of the initial launch cohort for the European Central Bank’s Pontes service. The move represents a significant step toward establishing infrastructure for digital securities trading and settlement across Europe using central bank money.

The ECB’s Pontes initiative aims to create a unified framework for settling digital financial instruments in central bank digital currency across participating European institutions. By joining this inaugural rollout, Axiology is positioning itself at the forefront of efforts to modernise Europe’s capital markets infrastructure through distributed ledger technology.

Building DLT infrastructure for financial markets

Axiology specializes in providing trading and settlement infrastructure designed specifically for digital securities on DLT-native platforms. The company’s participation in Pontes underscores the growing recognition that digital asset infrastructure requires settlement mechanisms compatible with blockchain-based systems.

“We are not dealing with cryptocurrency. We are dealing with financial instruments. But when you trade financial instruments on DLT-native infrastructure, you also need a settlement asset,” explained Martynas Pilkis, highlighting the distinction between speculative digital assets and regulated financial instruments operating on distributed ledger networks.

A step toward digital capital markets

The Pontes service represents a coordinated effort by European financial authorities to ensure that digital securities can be settled efficiently using central bank money rather than commercial bank deposits or volatile cryptocurrency alternatives. This technical advancement addresses a fundamental challenge facing the emerging digital securities market: how to ensure final settlement occurs on settlement-grade infrastructure.

For Axiology, the selection reflects confidence in its technical approach to building systems that bridge traditional finance and modern distributed ledger infrastructure. The Vilnius-based startup joins other selected institutions in what the ECB describes as a proof-of-concept phase for the broader Pontes ecosystem.

Implications for European fintech

Axiology’s inclusion in the Pontes initial launch comes at a time when European regulators are actively shaping rules for digital asset markets through frameworks such as the Digital Assets Regulation and the Regulation on Markets in Crypto-assets. The ECB’s initiative complements these regulatory efforts by providing the technical backbone for compliant digital securities settlement.

The expansion of Pontes participants and services will likely accelerate adoption of digital infrastructure among European financial institutions seeking to modernize their settlement capabilities. For startups like Axiology, such regulatory and technical initiatives create opportunities to develop solutions that meet the specific requirements of institutional financial market participants.

As Europe continues to develop its digital capital markets infrastructure, initiatives like Pontes signal that the continent is moving beyond conceptual discussions toward operational deployment of blockchain-based settlement systems for regulated financial instruments.
