Italian Startup Drita Capital Partners Launches Search Fund with €640,000 to Acquire Family-Owned SMEs

Drita Capital Partners has announced the establishment of Italy’s inaugural search fund, securing €640,000 in initial research capital to identify and acquire a high-potential Italian small-to-medium enterprise. The initiative represents a novel approach to business succession in the Italian market, combining investor capital with dedicated management expertise to target family-owned companies.

The search fund was founded by Nazario Monzillo and Yll Luma, both alumni of Polimi Graduate School of Management. The pair designed the vehicle to address a persistent gap in the Italian business landscape: the challenge of transitioning ownership and management in family businesses that lack clear succession planning or institutional backing.

A Fragmented Market Opportunity

According to Luma, the Italian economy presents unique conditions favoring the search-fund model. “The Italian market offers ideal conditions for the search‑fund model: a fragmented production fabric, strong growth potential and limited institutional capital dedicated to SMEs,” he stated. “Our goal is to build a bridge between capital and family businesses, providing continuity through industrial vision, managerial expertise and financial discipline.”

The fund has secured backing from a diversified investor network comprising both institutional and private capital sources. Supporters include Eureka! Venture, GDA Search, Evolutiq, Inseta Partners, Cabiedes, Pitlane Capital, Iberica Investments Partners, alongside individual investors Giovanni Affinita and Sascha Bovensmann.

Target Acquisition Profile

Over a planned 24-month scouting period, Drita Capital Partners will conduct comprehensive research to identify target companies meeting specific criteria. The acquisition target will be an Italian family-owned SME with annual revenues between €5 million and €40 million, operating in sectors including information and communication technology, healthcare, manufacturing, or food and beverage.

Once an acquisition is completed, the fund intends to provide long-term management and strategic oversight, positioning the business for sustainable growth and eventual exit through sale or strategic recapitalization.

European Search Fund Momentum

The launch of Italy’s first dedicated search fund reflects growing momentum across Europe for this acquisition model. Search funds, which have demonstrated particular success in Spain and Northern Europe, enable investors to identify and acquire established businesses with established operations, customer bases, and revenue streams. This contrasts with traditional venture capital approaches focused on early-stage technology companies.

Italy’s family business ecosystem remains one of Europe’s largest, yet faces well-documented challenges around generational succession and access to growth capital. Drita Capital Partners’ model directly addresses these pain points by positioning itself as an acquirer and professional operator rather than a financial investor seeking rapid exits.

The fund’s emergence signals renewed investor interest in European SME acquisition strategies, particularly in markets where fragmented ownership structures and limited institutional alternatives create acquisition opportunities aligned with sustainable, long-term value creation objectives.
