Aflabox, an Italian agritech company specializing in food safety detection, has closed a €1.35 million seed round to advance its industrial and commercial development. The funding round was led by Farming Future, with support from Eatable Adventures through the FoodSeed program.
The startup has developed a field-intelligence platform powered by artificial intelligence to enable rapid detection of mycotoxins—toxic compounds produced by fungi that pose significant risks to agricultural products and food safety. The technology addresses a critical challenge in global agri-food supply chains, where contamination detection remains resource-intensive and time-consuming.
Strengthening Operations and Scaling Infrastructure
Aflabox plans to deploy the fresh capital across multiple strategic priorities. The company will focus on completing validation and certification procedures for its detection device, ensuring compliance with international regulatory standards. Beyond certification, the startup intends to strengthen its commercial presence in Kenya, Nigeria, and Italy—markets where food safety concerns are particularly acute and where demand for field-based detection solutions remains high.
The funding will also support the establishment of a micro-factory dedicated to device production, enabling the company to scale manufacturing while maintaining quality control. Simultaneously, Aflabox will invest in enhancing its AI platform’s detection accuracy and expanding its distribution network across Africa and Europe. The company plans to reinforce its team to support these expansion efforts.
Addressing International Need
José Luis Cabañero, CEO and founder of Eatable Adventures, expressed confidence in Aflabox’s potential, stating that the startup “represents a concrete example of how technology and innovation can contribute to making agri‑food chains safer, more efficient and transparent.” He added that “the team has developed a solution with strong growth and impact potential, capable of addressing a significant international need,” noting that his organization is “pleased to accompany the company in this new development phase, supporting its industrial and commercial path.”
The investment reflects growing recognition within the European venture capital ecosystem that agricultural technology solutions addressing food safety can unlock substantial commercial and social value. Mycotoxin contamination affects millions of tons of agricultural products annually, creating economic losses and potential health risks across developed and developing markets alike.
Broader European Ecosystem Context
Aflabox’s funding round underscores the increasing maturity of Europe’s agritech investment landscape. Beyond traditional agricultural technology focused on yield optimization, investors are increasingly backing solutions that address supply chain transparency, food safety, and sustainability challenges. The involvement of specialized agritech investors like Farming Future demonstrates how dedicated venture funds continue to identify and support early-stage companies tackling specific problems within broader agricultural ecosystems. With multiple funding sources now channeling capital toward food safety innovations, European startups in this space are gaining access to capital previously concentrated in traditional agritech domains.
