Icelandic AI startup 50skills secures $6 million to expand HR automation platform

50skills, an Icelandic startup developing artificial intelligence tools for human resources operations, has raised $6 million in a funding round co-led by Frumtak Ventures, Swiss Post Ventures, Avant, and DRD Investments.

The capital injection will fuel the company’s expansion across several strategic areas, with the startup planning to grow its sales, marketing, and community teams while continuing to develop its core AI technology. The additional resources will also enable further refinement of AI agents designed to work directly with HR departments.

50skills has built what it describes as an operating system for people workflows, a platform that allows HR teams to design employee experiences while the underlying technology handles execution. The company positions itself in the growing market of HR automation tools that leverage artificial intelligence to streamline repetitive tasks and augment human decision-making.

According to Kristjan Freyr Kristjansson, the startup’s founder, the technical challenge lies in balancing three distinct operational requirements: deterministic workflows where processes must execute identically every time, probabilistic agents that require interpretation of context and nuance, and human oversight mechanisms that maintain governance and security standards. “We are building the operating system for people workflows, where HR teams design the experience they want for their employees and the platform runs it,” Kristjansson explained. “The hard part is the balance: deterministic workflows where a process has to run the same way every time, probabilistic agents where a step needs interpretation, and human oversight, governance and security throughout. For HR and people operators, that balance is not optional, it is the job. That is what we build, and this round lets us bring it to many more organisations.”

Addressing Complex HR Challenges

The funding round reflects investor confidence in 50skills’ approach to automating HR workflows while maintaining the human judgment essential to personnel management. Rather than replacing HR professionals entirely, the platform aims to augment their capabilities by handling routine tasks and providing intelligent recommendations that still require human approval.

The investor consortium represents a diverse set of backers with different geographic and sectoral focuses, suggesting broad recognition of the opportunity in HR automation across Europe. Swiss Post Ventures and Frumtak Ventures bring established networks across their respective regions, while Avant and DRD Investments contribute additional capital and strategic expertise.

European HR Tech Landscape

The funding announcement arrives as European startups increasingly compete with better-funded American competitors in the HR technology space. Companies addressing the intersection of artificial intelligence and people operations have attracted particular attention from venture investors seeking exposure to the ongoing digital transformation of corporate functions.

50skills’ approach, which emphasizes maintaining human oversight while deploying automation, reflects a cautious but pragmatic approach to AI adoption in sensitive organizational domains where employee relations and compliance considerations carry significant weight.
