Finnish Startup Ambio Secures €5.1M Seed Round to Scale AI-Powered Recycled Plastics Marketplace

Ambio, a Helsinki-based cleantech startup, has closed a €5.1 million seed round to accelerate its artificial intelligence-driven platform for recycled plastics procurement. The funding round was led by b2venture, with participation from Montis and Lifeline Ventures.

Founded in February 2023 by former members of the Slush conference team, Ambio has developed an end-to-end marketplace designed to address inefficiencies in the recycled plastics supply chain. The platform automates key processes including procurement, quality verification, and trading of recycled materials, targeting manufacturers and recyclers across Europe seeking reliable sources of secondary plastics.

Building Trust Through Technology

The capital infusion will support several strategic priorities for the startup. Ambio plans to construct a proprietary dataset that will enhance its AI matching capabilities, a critical component for connecting buyers and sellers of recycled plastics with precision. Additional resources will be directed toward improving the platform’s reliability and processing speed, factors essential for building confidence among market participants operating in a sector historically characterised by opacity and fragmentation.

The marketplace model addresses a persistent challenge in the circular economy: the difficulty manufacturers face in sourcing recycled plastics that meet their specifications while maintaining consistent quality standards. By centralising information and automating verification processes, Ambio seeks to reduce transaction costs and friction that have traditionally hampered growth in the secondary plastics market.

European Expansion Plans

Beyond platform refinement, Ambio intends to leverage the funding for geographical expansion across Europe. This growth trajectory reflects broader momentum in the recycled materials sector, where regulatory pressures and corporate sustainability commitments are driving increased demand for verified secondary materials.

Mathias Ockenfels, Partner at b2venture, expressed confidence in the company’s trajectory, stating: “We are convinced that Ambio will become the central marketplace for recycled plastics in Europe and beyond.” This assessment suggests investor conviction that the startup has identified a genuine market opportunity with significant scaling potential.

Emerging Market Dynamics

The investment comes amid growing attention to recycled plastics infrastructure across the European Union. With regulations such as the Extended Producer Responsibility directives and targets for recycled content in packaging, demand for efficient trading mechanisms for secondary plastics has intensified. Startups addressing supply chain fragmentation in the circular economy have attracted increasing capital from impact-focused and traditional venture investors alike.

Ambio’s positioning within this landscape reflects a broader ecosystem trend: recognising that technology solutions can unlock value in underserved segments of the circular economy. As Europe continues developing its recycled materials infrastructure, platforms that facilitate trust and transparency between market participants are likely to play instrumental roles in scaling the transition toward a more circular industrial model.
