Copenhagen Biotech Biograil Secures €20 Million Series A to Advance Oral Drug Delivery Platform

Biograil, a Copenhagen-based biotech company, has closed a €20 million Series A funding round to accelerate development of its oral drug delivery device platform. The round was led by Verve Ventures and supported by a syndicate of European investors including Megatrend Invest, the High-Tech Gründerfonds Opportunity growth fund, pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Co., Sanner Ventures, Evonik Venture Capital, Anobis GmbH, and Roquette Ventures.

Advancing BIONDD Technology

Founded in 2019, Biograil has developed BIONDD, an oral capsule technology designed to improve how medications are delivered and absorbed by the body. The funding will enable the company to progress this platform toward clinical validation while establishing the manufacturing infrastructure necessary for commercialisation.

The capital injection will support multiple concurrent workstreams, including Phase 1 clinical testing, non-clinical GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) studies, and the establishment of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) manufacturing processes. Additionally, the funding positions Biograil for a larger financing round anticipated in 2027.

Karsten Lindhardt, commenting on the round’s significance, stated: “Excellent to see such strong support from existing internal investors and involve the HTGF Opportunity growth fund in the round. This, in combination with non‑diluting funding from partnerships, will enable Biograil to continue to move our BIONDD® technology toward Phase 1 clinical studies.” — Karsten Lindhardt

Strategic Backing in Drug Delivery

The involvement of major pharmaceutical and venture partners underscores confidence in Biograil’s approach to oral drug delivery, a sector where innovation remains critical. Oral delivery systems represent a substantial market opportunity, as they offer advantages over traditional administration methods including improved patient compliance and reduced manufacturing complexity.

The participation of Eli Lilly and Co., one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical corporations, signals validation from an established player in the sector. The inclusion of speciality materials and manufacturing partners such as Evonik Venture Capital and Roquette Ventures suggests that Biograil’s technology may benefit from collaboration across the supply chain.

European Healthtech Investment Context

Biograil’s Series A round reflects continued momentum in European biotech funding, particularly in specialised areas such as drug delivery and medical devices. The involvement of funds like Verve Ventures and the HTGF Opportunity growth fund demonstrates ongoing investor appetite for early-stage healthtech companies addressing unmet clinical needs.

The Danish startup’s progress contributes to Copenhagen’s growing reputation as a centre for life sciences innovation. With backing from both venture capital specialists and strategic corporate investors, Biograil exemplifies the type of deep-tech biotech ventures increasingly attracting capital across Europe’s startup ecosystem.
