Belgian AI startup Backbone secures €4 million pre-seed funding to streamline food industry compliance

Backbone, a Belgian software startup focused on the food industry, has closed a €4 million pre-seed funding round to accelerate the development of its artificial intelligence-powered quality and compliance platform. The round was led by Pitchdrive, with participation from PROfounders Capital, Passion Capital, 100IN, Agristo, and Darta.

The company, which launched in 2025, has developed a platform designed to centralise quality and compliance data for food manufacturers and producers. Rather than viewing the new funding as a milestone celebration, Backbone frames it as a practical step toward solving a genuine operational challenge facing the food industry.

Connecting Fragmented Data Systems

According to co-founder Louis Opsomer, the core problem the platform addresses stems from data fragmentation across production environments. “A food company today has all the data it needs to make better quality decisions, but the different data points aren’t talking to each other. We build an intelligence layer that connects those dots, understands the context and puts it to work,” Opsomer explained.

Food manufacturers typically operate multiple systems—from production monitoring equipment to laboratory information management systems to enterprise resource planning software. Backbone’s platform acts as a unified interface, leveraging artificial intelligence to process disparate data sources and generate actionable insights for quality assurance and regulatory compliance purposes.

Expansion Plans and Strategic Partnerships

The funding will support three primary objectives for Backbone’s near-term strategy. The company plans to invest in further product development to expand the platform’s capabilities and functionality. Simultaneously, Backbone intends to pursue marketing expansion efforts to increase market awareness and customer acquisition, particularly as it enters new geographic markets.

The third use of funds focuses on establishing partnerships with international certification bodies and ERP implementation partners. These strategic relationships will enable Backbone to integrate more seamlessly into the existing software ecosystems that food companies already rely upon for their operations.

Backbone’s immediate geographic focus extends beyond Belgium to include the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, positioning the startup to serve a broader European audience within the food production sector.

Broader European Context

The funding round reflects continued investor appetite for enterprise software solutions addressing regulatory complexity and operational efficiency. The food industry, subject to stringent compliance requirements across European jurisdictions, represents a sector where technology-driven solutions have historically commanded strong demand. Backbone’s success in securing backing from multiple established venture investors suggests confidence that AI-powered compliance platforms represent a viable market opportunity within European foodtech.

The company’s emergence also coincides with growing recognition among European startups that vertical software solutions—platforms tailored to specific industries—can achieve stronger unit economics and customer retention than horizontal offerings.
