Pluria, a Romanian SaaS and coworking platform founded in 2020, has participated in the Beyond Borders “Madrid Market Immersion” program, a four-day initiative designed to help emerging companies navigate expansion into the Spanish market.
The program, organized by Endeavor Romania in partnership with Romanian Business Leaders and Banca Transilvania, brought together a cohort of Romanian startups to Madrid for intensive market exploration and strategic planning. The initiative combined structured mentorship sessions with practical networking opportunities, connecting participants with Spanish institutional support and Romania’s diplomatic presence in the country.
Bridging Knowledge and Opportunity
During the immersion, participating startups met with representatives from ICEX Spain (the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade) and accessed guidance from Romania’s diplomatic network. These interactions provided founders with direct insights into Spanish regulatory frameworks, market dynamics, and potential partnership pathways. The program addressed a critical challenge for European startups seeking to scale internationally: understanding local business environments and building networks before entering new markets.
Pluria’s participation reflects the platform’s existing international trajectory. According to Andrei Crețu, a key figure at the company, the startup has already established a significant presence beyond Romania’s borders. “We have a dual perspective on internationalization,” Crețu explained. “On one hand, we have already taken the step: 80% of Pluria’s business comes from outside Romania, largely from Latin America. On the other hand, each new market shows us how much more we have to learn. International expansion remains a leap into the unknown,” he noted.
Strategic Market Selection
The company’s decision to explore Spain through the Endeavor program suggests a deliberate geographic diversification strategy. While Pluria has built substantial operations in Latin American markets, Europe presents distinct opportunities and challenges. The Spanish market, as a gateway to both European Union operations and broader Iberian Peninsula expansion, offers strategic positioning for scaling SaaS and coworking solutions.
The immersion approach deployed by Endeavor Romania differs from traditional investor pitch events or accelerator programs. Rather than focusing solely on fundraising, the initiative prioritizes market education and relationship-building, recognizing that informed market entry decisions require more than capital access.
Broader European Context
The program reflects growing momentum in supporting Eastern European startup internationalization. As the European startup ecosystem matures, organizations like Endeavor are shifting focus toward helping regional companies expand across borders rather than exclusively attracting foreign investment. Romania’s startup sector has demonstrated particular dynamism in recent years, with companies spanning sectors from software development to collaborative workspace solutions increasingly targeting international markets.
Such initiatives also highlight the role that established financial institutions and business networks play in supporting startup scaling. Banca Transilvania’s involvement underscores how traditional banking sectors increasingly partner with innovation ecosystems to facilitate growth-stage company expansion.
For Romanian startups like Pluria that have already achieved significant international traction, programs such as Madrid Market Immersion provide structured pathways to enter new geographic markets while leveraging peer learning and institutional support within defined timeframes.
