French Deeptech Startup Lightspring Secures €3.5 Million to Commercialise Optical Coupling Technology

Lightspring, a French deeptech company, has closed a €3.5 million seed financing round to advance its 3D optical coupling technology for photonic chips. The round comprises a €3.1 million seed investment and a €350,000 grant, positioning the company to address a critical bottleneck in photonic packaging.

The funding was led by Atlantic, with participation from OVNI Capital, Concept Ventures, Ixcore, Plug and Play Ventures, and industry business angels. The capital infusion marks a significant step for the French startup as it moves toward commercialising its proprietary lithography technology.

Solving the Photonic Packaging Challenge

Lightspring’s core innovation targets a fundamental inefficiency in photonic chip design. As Grégoire Bonnat, the company’s CEO, explained: “The whole industry is working on making photonic chips faster, yet light still loses most of its energy the moment it enters or leaves the device. We decided to attack that specific problem: to build the optical interface the same way the rest of the chip is built, in one reproducible process step.”

The company’s technology transforms what has traditionally been a costly, low-yield manufacturing process into a programmable, single-step operation. This approach streamlines optical packaging—the interface through which light enters and exits photonic devices—a process that has historically required separate, expensive fabrication steps prone to efficiency losses.

Capital Deployment and Growth Plans

Lightspring intends to deploy the fresh capital across multiple strategic initiatives. The company will develop its Process Design Kit and associated design tools, essential resources for enabling broader adoption of its technology. Simultaneously, the startup plans to expand its team to accelerate product development and market entry.

The funding will also support collaborative co-design programmes with industrial partners, helping to validate the technology within real-world manufacturing environments. Additionally, Lightspring will focus on scaling and qualifying its 3D optical coupling fabrication process to meet industrial production standards.

Positioning for the AI Hardware Boom

The timing of Lightspring’s funding aligns with growing momentum in photonic computing, driven by surging demand for AI hardware solutions. As data centres increasingly adopt photonic-based systems to improve energy efficiency and processing speeds, the need for reliable, cost-effective optical packaging solutions has become more pressing. By solving the interface challenge, Lightspring positions itself to capture value across this expanding market.

European Deeptech Momentum

Lightspring’s funding reflects the broader strength of France’s deeptech ecosystem and Europe’s increasing investment in photonics and semiconductor-adjacent technologies. The participation of established European venture capital firms such as Atlantic and Concept Ventures underscores sustained confidence in frontier technology investments. As European policymakers emphasise strategic autonomy in critical semiconductor and photonic technologies, companies like Lightspring represent the kind of innovation-driven infrastructure Europe seeks to develop domestically.
