Italian Robotic Surgery Startup MMI Secures €17 Million From Angelini Ventures and European Investment Bank

MMI, an Italian medtech company developing robotic systems for micro-surgery, has secured €17 million in Series B funding from Angelini Ventures and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The investment represents the inaugural transaction under a broader €150 million partnership announced by the two organizations to support European health-tech innovation.

Based in Pisa and founded in 2015, MMI has developed the Symani platform, a robotic micro-instrument system designed to enhance precision in micro- and super-micro surgical procedures. The capital infusion will accelerate product development, commercialization efforts, and the company’s international expansion while supporting the regulatory approval process across key markets.

Supporting European Health-Tech Growth

The investment underscores the commitment both Angelini Ventures and the European Investment Bank have made to strengthening Europe’s competitive position in healthcare technology. Paolo Di Giorgio, CEO of Angelini Ventures, emphasized this strategic direction, stating: “With this new investment we continue the path started together with the European Investment Bank to support the growth of the best European healthcare and medtech startups and to strengthen a more competitive health ecosystem.”

The €150 million partnership framework signals a sustained effort to identify and fund promising health-tech innovators across the continent. By combining Angelini Ventures’ sectoral expertise with the EIB’s financing capabilities and development mandate, the collaboration aims to address gaps in funding for European companies operating in the healthcare space.

Scaling Surgical Innovation

The Symani system targets a critical gap in surgical technology. Micro-surgery requires exceptional precision for procedures involving delicate structures, and robotic assistance can enhance surgeon capabilities while potentially improving patient outcomes. MMI’s technology addresses demand from hospitals and surgical centers seeking advanced instrumentation for complex procedures.

The funding will enable MMI to advance its technology platform, expand its sales and distribution networks, and navigate the regulatory requirements necessary for market entry in additional jurisdictions. These elements are essential for any medtech company seeking to scale beyond its home market.

Broader Ecosystem Context

This investment reflects a wider trend of institutional capital flowing toward European health-tech startups. The European Investment Bank has increasingly positioned itself as a key financier for early-stage companies in strategic sectors, while corporate venture arms like Angelini Ventures bring both capital and operational expertise to their portfolio companies.

The partnership between Angelini Ventures and the EIB signals confidence in Europe’s ability to develop innovative healthcare solutions that can compete globally. With €150 million allocated to the initiative, additional transactions are expected as the organizations identify further opportunities within the health-tech space. For emerging companies like MMI, access to this combination of corporate backing and development finance represents a significant opportunity to accelerate growth and establish European leadership in specialized surgical technologies.
