Rulen, an Italian artificial intelligence startup, has closed a €1.8 million seed funding round to accelerate the development of its AI-powered platform designed to automate tax and accounting workflows. The round was led by VC Partners, with participation from Growth Engine, AME Ventures, Zest (through its Magic Mind vehicle), Alpha Venture, and a group of industry business angels.
The company, which recently rebranded from its former name LexSA, operates at the intersection of fintech and AI, targeting a significant pain point within the European tax and accounting sector. The platform aims to address widespread challenges related to talent shortages and the mounting complexity of tax compliance requirements across European jurisdictions.
Expanding Capabilities and Team
Rulen intends to deploy the capital across multiple strategic initiatives. The company will accelerate product development to enhance its platform’s capabilities, particularly in transitioning from an assistant-based model to what it describes as an agentic platform. The funding will also support commercial expansion efforts and facilitate hiring across critical departments including sales, marketing, product development, and specialized tax expertise.
Speaking about the funding and the company’s vision, Rulen co-founder and leader Simone Hong stated: “Our goal is to make AI adoption simple, concrete and scalable. With this round and the move to Rulen, we want to accelerate our transformation from assistant to agentic platform, capable of automating end‑to‑end workflows without professionals losing control and verifiability.”
This statement underscores a key positioning for the platform: maintaining professional oversight and audit trails while automating routine compliance and accounting tasks. The emphasis on verifiability suggests that Rulen is designing its solution with regulatory compliance and professional accountability in mind—crucial considerations for fintech solutions operating in heavily regulated sectors.
Addressing Market Needs
The Italian tax and accounting sector, like many parts of Europe, faces persistent challenges in modernization. Regulatory complexity, combined with a shortage of qualified professionals willing to handle repetitive compliance work, has created opportunities for AI-driven automation. Rulen’s approach targets accountants and tax professionals who seek to leverage automation while maintaining the oversight necessary for regulatory compliance.
The diverse investor syndicate reflects confidence in the startup’s approach from multiple perspectives. VC Partners’ lead position signals backing from an experienced venture capital firm, while the participation of specialized investors like AME Ventures and Growth Engine indicates sector-specific expertise in the funding group.
European Fintech Momentum
Rulen’s funding comes amid broader expansion of AI-powered fintech solutions across Europe. The region has increasingly become a hub for startups addressing compliance automation and regulatory technology needs, particularly as European regulations evolve and businesses seek efficiency gains. With this seed round, Rulen joins a growing cohort of European AI startups focused on transforming traditionally manual, knowledge-intensive sectors through intelligent automation.
