Lumilab, a Copenhagen-based cleantech startup, has closed an undisclosed pre-seed funding round led by Giant Ventures, with additional participation from investors Nicolaj Reffstrup, Tommy Ahlers and Thomas Skov Reunert.
The company, which emerged from research at the University of Copenhagen, has developed an artificial intelligence platform designed to streamline the management of distributed energy assets. The technology connects fragmented data systems and software infrastructure to monitor and automate operations across a range of renewable energy installations, including electric vehicle chargers, solar installations and battery parks.
Addressing Operational Fragmentation
Energy operators increasingly face complexity when managing multiple systems and data sources across their infrastructure. Lumilab’s solution addresses this challenge by creating a unified operational layer that allows AI agents to analyse problems and execute actions across various systems automatically. This approach aims to reduce manual intervention and improve efficiency in energy infrastructure management.
According to Sofus Laub Erdal, Chief Executive of Lumilab, the company’s vision extends beyond current market needs. “We’re building applied intelligence for the infrastructure that powers society. Our AI agents reason through problems and take action across operational systems. Our ambition is to help every energy operator run and scale the infrastructure society depends on,” Erdal stated.
Growth and Global Expansion Plans
The newly secured capital will support two primary objectives for Lumilab: expanding its team and scaling deployments of the platform across global energy infrastructure networks. As the transition to renewable energy accelerates worldwide, operators require increasingly sophisticated tools to manage complex, distributed systems efficiently.
The funding announcement reflects growing investor confidence in artificial intelligence solutions tailored for critical infrastructure challenges. The participation of both institutional investors and individual backers with established track records in the Danish technology ecosystem suggests broader market recognition for automation technologies in the energy sector.
European Momentum in Cleantech AI
Lumilab’s funding round contributes to a broader trend within the European startup ecosystem, where cleantech companies leveraging artificial intelligence are attracting significant investor interest. Denmark has emerged as a notable hub for renewable energy innovation, with Copenhagen serving as home to numerous startups addressing challenges in distributed energy systems, grid optimization and operational efficiency.
The combination of strong academic research foundations—in this case, the University of Copenhagen—with private capital investment has proven effective for developing deep-tech solutions in the energy transition. As European nations accelerate decarbonisation efforts and deploy increasing volumes of renewable generation capacity, the operational challenges that Lumilab targets are expected to become increasingly critical for infrastructure operators across the continent.
