US Networking Giant Ciena Acquires Italian Photonics Startup PhotonPath

PhotonPath, an Italian deep-tech startup specializing in photonics technology, has been fully acquired by Ciena, a US-listed networking company. The Milan-based firm, which was founded in 2019 as a spin-off from Politecnico di Milano, will maintain its headquarters and workforce in Italy following the transaction.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. PhotonPath had raised €8.3 million in total funding from a consortium of European investors including 360 Capital Partners, Join Capital, Deep Ocean Capital, Levante Capital, Brembo, and CDP Venture Capital.

Strategic Addition to Ciena’s Optical Portfolio

The acquisition represents a strategic expansion of Ciena’s capabilities in photonic integration technology. PhotonPath’s expertise centers on integrated photonic circuits (PIC) and advanced optical materials, with particular strength in silicon oxynitride technology—a material gaining prominence in next-generation optical systems.

According to Ciena’s statement on the deal, the Italian startup’s technological competencies complement the US company’s existing photonic integration strengths. “PhotonPath’s experience in integrated photonic circuits and advanced optical materials, including silicon oxynitride technology, complements Ciena’s world-leading photonic integration capabilities and strengthens our long-term optical innovation roadmap. Together, we will continue to drive miniaturization of optical technology, reduce power consumption, and improve cost-effectiveness of large-scale deployments, helping customers address growing artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure needs,” Ciena stated.

Commitment to Italian Operations

The decision to retain PhotonPath’s Italian base and team reflects the quality of talent and research capabilities available in the Milan region. The company’s origins within Politecnico di Milano, one of Europe’s leading technical universities, provided a strong foundation for developing cutting-edge photonics solutions.

PhotonPath’s technology addresses critical challenges facing the telecommunications and data center industries. As artificial intelligence workloads expand globally, the demand for more efficient optical infrastructure intensifies. Photonic integrated circuits offer potential advantages in reducing power consumption and improving data transmission efficiency compared to traditional electronic approaches.

European Deep-Tech Momentum

The acquisition of PhotonPath underscores the growing interest from larger technology companies in European deep-tech ventures. Italian startups in the photonics and semiconductor sectors have attracted increasing attention from international acquirers seeking specialized capabilities in advanced materials and integrated circuit design.

The deal also reflects the broader European strategy of venture capital firms focused on deep-tech innovation. Investors like CDP Venture Capital, the investment arm of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, have prioritized funding early-stage companies in critical technology sectors where Europe aims to maintain competitive advantage.

PhotonPath’s journey from academic spin-off to acquisition by a major US networking company demonstrates a successful pathway for European deep-tech entrepreneurs to achieve scale and impact on global markets.
