Biorsaf, an Italian food safety startup, has secured €5.2 million ($5.6 million) in Series A funding and acquired Bologna-based RegTech platform Cooki as part of an expansion strategy targeting the country’s food compliance sector.
The funding round was led by P101 SGR, with participation from Maia Ventures, Farming Future – the National Technology Transfer Hub for AgrifoodTech, and Toscana Next. The combined investment and acquisition represent a significant consolidation move in Italy’s fragmented food safety technology market.
Founded in 2021, Biorsaf has developed a platform designed to automate compliance processes across Italy’s food, workplace, and water safety regulations. The acquisition of Cooki extends this offering by integrating additional capabilities for traceability, labeling, and cost analysis across the entire food value chain.
Scaling Operations and Technology Development
The capital injection will be deployed across three main areas: scaling the business organically and through market consolidation, developing proprietary artificial intelligence tools for food safety and quality management, and integrating the Cooki acquisition into Biorsaf’s existing platform.
According to Marco Papalini, CEO of Biorsaf, the expansion represents a natural progression for the company. “This new funding round and the acquisition of Cooki accelerate Biorsaf’s growth,” he stated. “In just three years, we have built Italy’s reference platform for automating food compliance, and we are ready for the next development stage.”
The company plans to grow its headcount from 40 to 120 employees and expand its active user base beyond 10,000. These ambitious targets reflect confidence in the market opportunity within Italy’s food industry, where regulatory requirements continue to increase in complexity.
Consolidating a Fragmented Market
The acquisition of Cooki signals Biorsaf’s strategy to consolidate the fragmented Italian food RegTech landscape. By combining both platforms’ capabilities, the merged entity aims to offer the first comprehensive, end-to-end AI-driven solution addressing compliance, traceability, labeling requirements, and operational cost analysis.
Food companies in Italy face an intricate web of regulatory requirements spanning food safety, workplace safety, and water safety standards. Biorsaf’s platform promises to simplify this compliance burden through automation and artificial intelligence, reducing manual administrative work and improving operational efficiency.
European RegTech Landscape
The funding comes at a time when European startups in the regulatory technology space are attracting increased investor attention. Food RegTech, in particular, has become a growing focus area as European Union regulations around food labeling, traceability, and sustainability reporting continue to expand. Italian investors’ backing of Biorsaf reflects broader confidence in technology-driven solutions that help businesses navigate complex regulatory environments.
With this funding round, Biorsaf joins a growing cohort of European RegTech companies addressing sector-specific compliance challenges, positioning itself as a potential model for regulatory technology solutions in Italy’s food industry.
