Wayve, the London-based artificial intelligence driving startup, has begun offering supervised autonomous rides to the public through Uber’s platform in the British capital. The service represents the first time autonomous vehicles have been made available for public trips in the United Kingdom.
The partnership allows users requesting UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort rides to be matched with a Wayve-powered autonomous vehicle at no extra charge. The autonomous rides operate using an electric Ford Mustang Mach-E equipped with Wayve’s AI driving technology, with a licensed safety driver present on board to oversee operations.
“We’re proud to introduce the Wayve AI Driver to the public for the first time right here in London, our home city and one of the most complex driving environments in the world,” said Alex Kendall, co-founder of Wayve, which was established in 2018.
