Butlaroo, a Dutch technology startup specializing in QR-code based ordering and payment solutions for the hospitality sector, has secured multi-million euro funding from Jitse Groen, the founder of food delivery giant Thuisbezorgd.
The investment represents Butlaroo’s first major funding round and grants Groen a minority stake in the Eindhoven-based company. Founded in 2014, Butlaroo provides digital ordering and payment platforms designed specifically for restaurants, hotels, and holiday parks seeking to modernize their operations and enhance the guest experience.
The capital injection will be directed toward accelerating technology development and driving expansion across Europe and beyond. The investment signals growing confidence in the shift toward contactless, digital-first solutions in the hospitality industry, a transition that gained momentum during recent years but continues to reshape how establishments manage customer interactions.
Addressing a Growing Market Need
Butlaroo’s platform addresses a fundamental challenge facing hospitality venues: the need to balance operational efficiency with improved customer experience. Rather than relying on traditional paper menus and manual service processes, the company’s solution enables guests to browse offerings, place orders, and complete payments through their mobile devices via QR codes.
Daniël Duwaer, a key figure at Butlaroo, highlighted the technological opportunities within the sector. “In hospitality we often still think of paper menus and manual processes, but that image is outdated. More and more guests order and pay digitally. With AI we can learn from that behaviour and automatically respond to what guests want,” Duwaer stated.
This comment underscores how Butlaroo’s platform extends beyond simple ordering functionality, incorporating artificial intelligence to analyze customer behavior patterns and help establishments optimize their offerings and operations.
Strategic Backing from Industry Veteran
The involvement of Jitse Groen lends substantial credibility to Butlaroo’s growth trajectory. Groen built Thuisbezorgd into one of Europe’s leading online food delivery platforms before its merger with Delivery Hero, demonstrating deep expertise in scaling technology-driven solutions within the food and hospitality sectors. His decision to invest personally in Butlaroo suggests confidence in both the company’s technology and its expansion potential.
The timing of this investment reflects broader trends within European hospitality technology. Venues across the continent continue seeking tools that reduce labor requirements, minimize contact between staff and customers, and provide valuable data about consumer preferences. Butlaroo’s focus on these pain points positions it within a growing segment of hospitality-tech solutions gaining traction across the region.
As Butlaroo prepares to accelerate its European expansion, the company joins numerous startups addressing digital transformation within traditional hospitality sectors. The sector remains fragmented across different European markets, offering significant runway for platforms that can adapt to local regulations and consumer preferences while maintaining operational efficiency.
