Finnish Medtech Startup Cornea Sense Raises €1.1M to Develop Corneal Hydration Measurement Technology

Cornea Sense, a Finnish medtech company based in Espoo, has closed a pre-seed funding round exceeding €1.1 million to advance its non-invasive corneal hydration measurement technology. The round was led by Innovestor Angel CoFund, with additional support from Business Finland’s R&D grant programme and angel investors Matts Linder and Patrick Aisher.

The startup, which emerged from research at Aalto University, is developing a diagnostic tool that combines terahertz sensing with optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure corneal hydration—a parameter that currently lacks practical measurement methods in clinical settings. This funding will support the company through several critical development phases, including building a human-compatible research prototype, advancing both technical and clinical validation, conducting preclinical studies, and preparing regulatory pathways for eventual commercialisation.

Addressing an Unmet Clinical Need

According to Dr. Anton Chernenko, CEO and Co-Founder of Cornea Sense, the importance of corneal hydration measurement has long been overlooked due to technical limitations. “Ask an ophthalmologist about corneal hydration and the first response is usually, Why would that matter? Give them thirty seconds, and they will list several clinical decisions it could improve. It is not that the parameter does not matter—it is that no one has had a practical way to measure it. That is what we are changing,” Chernenko stated.

Corneal hydration plays a role in various ocular conditions and can inform treatment decisions across multiple clinical scenarios. By developing a non-invasive measurement approach, Cornea Sense aims to unlock diagnostic capabilities that have remained inaccessible to practitioners, potentially improving patient outcomes in ophthalmology and related fields.

Strategic Validation and Growth

The capital raise reflects confidence in the company’s technological approach and market opportunity. The funding will enable Cornea Sense to generate the evidence base necessary for regulatory approval while simultaneously advancing the technical maturity of its prototype. This staged approach positions the startup to transition from research phase to commercialisation readiness.

The involvement of Business Finland, which supports Finnish research and development initiatives, underscores the strategic importance of this technology development within the country’s innovation ecosystem.

European Medtech Context

Cornea Sense’s funding round represents ongoing momentum in European medtech innovation, where university spinouts continue to address clinical gaps through novel sensing and measurement technologies. Finnish startups have increasingly attracted venture attention in the healthtech sector, building on the country’s established expertise in digital health and medical device development. As European regulators continue refining pathways for novel diagnostic devices, companies like Cornea Sense are positioned to bring new measurement capabilities to clinical practice while meeting evolving regulatory standards.
