Finnish Weather Data Startup Skyfora Secures €6.5 Million to Expand Atmospheric Sensing Platform

Skyfora, a Finnish cleantech company specializing in weather data and atmospheric sensing, has announced a €6.5 million funding round to accelerate the commercial rollout of its innovative platform that leverages existing mobile network infrastructure for climate intelligence and weather forecasting.

The round was led by Ugly Duckling Ventures, with participation from Eviny Ventures, LUMO Labs, the European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund, and Business Finland. This brings Skyfora’s total funding to €10.5 million since its founding in 2019.

Leveraging Telecom Infrastructure for Climate Data

Skyfora’s core innovation transforms mobile networks into a distributed sensing layer capable of collecting atmospheric data at scale. Rather than relying solely on traditional weather stations and satellites, the company taps into the existing infrastructure of telecommunications providers to gather real-time information about weather patterns and atmospheric conditions.

“We’re turning existing mobile networks into the data layer for next-generation weather forecasting and climate intelligence,” said Fredrik Borgström, a company representative, highlighting the platform’s transformative potential in how meteorological data is collected and analyzed.

The fresh capital will be deployed to accelerate the commercial deployment of Skyfora’s atmospheric sensing network while expanding partnerships with key players in both the telecommunications and weather industry sectors. These collaborations are essential to the company’s strategy of embedding its technology into existing infrastructure networks across Europe.

Addressing Critical Climate Intelligence Gaps

The funding round underscores growing investor interest in technologies that address climate monitoring and weather prediction challenges. As extreme weather events become increasingly common across Europe, the demand for more granular, real-time atmospheric data has intensified. Skyfora’s approach offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional methods by utilizing infrastructure that is already in place.

The company’s platform generates proprietary data products derived from its atmospheric sensing network, providing enhanced forecasting capabilities and climate intelligence to various sectors including agriculture, energy, transportation, and emergency management.

Growing European Cleantech Momentum

Skyfora’s successful funding round reflects broader momentum in the European cleantech and climate tech ecosystem. Finnish startups have gained particular prominence in the weather and climate space, supported by strong public sector backing and a culture of technological innovation. The involvement of the European Innovation Council Fund in this round signals institutional recognition of the importance of such technologies at the EU policy level.

As European companies continue developing solutions to monitor and respond to climate challenges, atmospheric sensing platforms like Skyfora’s represent a category of infrastructure-adjacent technologies that can deliver measurable impact with relatively rapid deployment timelines across multiple markets.
